Opera

Popularity (including mobile browser):

Opera definitely seems to be growing in popularity especially as mobile internet devices become more popular. Iphone’s safari is the companies greatest competitor. The Opera is used mostly in Europe with up to 25% usage in Russia. The English language browser share is only about 2%. Over 40 million cell phones have now been prepackaged with Opera. A browser for the iPhone has been created but as far as I know has not been approved by Apple due to competition with its Safari Browser.

Internet Features:

The internet features is what I find most interesting about Opera. They creators seem to have a much more interactive approach to browsing. Users can zoom in on a page, alter the style of a page through CSS to make colors brighter or change the format, they can also be directed to parts of a page that might be most useful by running a search for words on a particular page.

On the mobile browser tabbing is enabled, allowing users to more quickly navigate from page to page. There is also a feature called speed dial which seems like bookmarking there is no need to open a book mark folder; you can simply type a CTRL+ “number” to access the site, like speed dial on your phone. It also loads websites quickly onto its browser by redirecting directs server requests through its server, eliminating potential harmful requests, reducing size and reformatting so that is compatible with a mobile browser.

Finally, Opera is also compliant with web standards and works in many different operating systems. It was one of the first browsers to accommodate CSS and maintains compliance unlike some of its competitors. Opera has browsers for Nintendo DC and the WII. I think Opera will grow to be more popular in the future.

Educational Research:

Opera is also dedicated to teaching the community about the Web. They believe the internet should be free and accessible to all. With concerns rising about government involvement with regulating the internet, Opera hopes to be a strong voice of reason. Opera has opportunities for students at universities to learn more about the following
• the history and future of the Web
• the browser industry
• open Web standards
• Web applications
• the role of the Web and mobile browsing, particularly in developing countries
I personally believe empowering young people about the internet is a great way promote Opera and give realistic insight into the IT industry.
